You just pull the tab on the back where it comes with 4 AAA batteries. I was glad the batteries were included because I wanted to use it right away. The scale is larger than the normal size that I have seen or used. The numbers are super bright and large. Your feet or shoes fit so good on it. I have had scales where your feet cover up the numbers but that won't happen with this one because it is so big. You do NOT have to tap it. You just step on it and it is ready to weigh. It is very very impressive. I would even say, would be a very good gift. I received this product for my honest and unbiased opinion. In my opinion, this is the classiest, high quality scale I have seen.
